Summer Education Learning Fundamentals or S.E.L.F., is a program created to prevent the “summer slide” and enrich the lives of children in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade in the Clarksville community and surrounding areas. S.E.L.F. is a registered member of the National Summer Learning Association.

The main focus areas for S.E.L.F. are reinforcing reading, math, fitness, life skills and self-awareness, which are very important in a child’s development. Research from the Center for Summer Learning at the Johns Hopkins University shows that teachers spend a good deal of time in the fall re-teaching skills from the previous grade that were lost over the summer break. Students can fall an average of 2.6 months behind in math and reading. School age children need to stay academically active during summer break.

The S.E.L.F. program was designed to be very affordable at $100 per week. There is a $35 non-refundable registration fee and families with more than one child may qualify for scholarships and multi-child discounts. The camp is held at R.E.O.C from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. In the S.E.L.F. Summer Day Camp children get to enhance their reading and math skills, participate in various creative art projects, learn Spanish, take field trips, stay physically active, enjoy nutritious meals and snacks and learn important life skills all while having fun.
